Rundown
Having the best equipment in the game is not enough to be able to solo end game bosses like Chaos Vellum, Hellux and Hard Magnus. That's where cubing comes in. Cubes are items that reset and have the chance to raise the level of potentials on your equipment.
There are four levels of potential (Worst to best): Rare, Epic, Unique and Legendary.

You can have up to three lines of potential (Use Potential Stamps to increase the number of lines on your gear).
There are two ways in which you can get potential on your gear. You can find your gear with the potential, or use Epic Potential Scrolls on your gear in order to get it.

Cubes
There are three different types of cubes that you can buy in Reboot: Master Craftsman Cubes, Red Cubes and Black Cubes.
Master Craftsman Cubes cost 7,500,000 mesos at the Henesys General Shop.
They can raise potentials from Rare to Epic, and Epic to Unique.
Red Cubes cost 12,000,000 mesos or 1,200 Reward Points in the Cash Shop.
They can raise potentials from Rare to Epic, Epic to Unique and Unique to Legendary.
Black Cubes cost 22,000,000 mesos or 2,200 Reward Points in the Cash Shop.
They can raise potentials from Rare to Epic, Epic to Unique and Unique to Legendary.
Q: How do I get Epic Potential Scrolls?
A: Finish the Yu Garden questline (6 scrolls per week)
Unlike other cubes, Black Cubes, when used, will allow you to choose between the new and old potential. This is useful when you have a good potential already, but want an even better one.

Methods
Nexon has never released the chance rates of cubes raising potential levels. People have done countless tests, but it seems that Nexon constantly changes the rates or have a system in which the rates change themselves randomly. It is one of the things that people have never figured out in MapleStory.
A combination of limited information and communication has ended up in players all having their own ways in which to cube their gear. A few of the methods and their pros and cons are listed:
Epic Potential Scroll -> Red Cubes to desired potential
This method bets on the idea that Red Cubes have better rates than Master Craftsman Cubes and the same rates as Black Cubes. This method is a medium between spending a lot of mesos for supposedly better rates and spending less mesos for supposedly similar rates.
Epic Potential Scroll -> Black Cubes to desired potential
This method bets on the idea that Black Cubes have the best rates in the game. It's a good method if you're using one or two cubes at a time, instead of saving up and then have a cubing spree, as you can keep good potentials with Black Cubes.
Epic Potential Scroll -> Master Craftsman Cubes to Unique -> Red Cubes to desired potential
This method bets on the idea that all cubes have the same rates. If they do have the same rates, this would be the best way to go for cubing. This is a good method for going on cubing sprees.
Epic Potential Scroll -> Red Cubes to good potential -> Black Cubes to desired potential
This is a medium between using only Red Cubes or only using Black Cubes. It is a good method for cubing over time instead of in one big spree.

Mix and Match
Create a method based on how you play.
Epic Potential Scrolls: Should always be used on gear. Guarantees that you start at Epic potential. You could bet on the fact that you'll go from Rare to Epic in one or two Master Craftsman Cubes or Red Cubes, but it is unlikely.
Master Craftsman Cubes: Good for saving money. Bets on the idea that they have the same rates as Red Cubes and Black Cubes.
Red Cubes: Good for late game, when you can afford to lose some range for a while. Best for going on cubing sprees, when you have a high chance to get your desired potential by spamming Red Cubes. Saves a lot of money if they have the same rates as Black Cubes.
Black Cubes: Good for early game, when you need every bit of range in order to do certain bosses as you progress. Can be used in cubing sprees if you believe that they have better rates than Red Cubes and Master Craftsman Cubes.
